Galenicum 1822 is the rehabilitation of an industrial complex in Esplugues de Llobregat (Barcelona) into a new headquarters, using the existing structure as the main environmental asset. Instead of replacing the building with a fully sealed, fully conditioned office, the project creates a large intermediate “in-between” climate zone inside the rehabilitated envelope: a sequence of gardens, courtyards and sheltered passages protected by the original factory walls and roof. This buffered interior landscape works predominantly through bioclimatic behaviour. A new, better-insulated skin reduces winter losses and summer gains, while daylight is maximised through the generous existing spans and roof geometry. In winter, the intermediate space is tempered by pre-heating the primary air and by using internal gains from the work areas; in summer, it is purged through natural/assisted ventilation to remove heat and refresh the courtyards. The result is a stable, comfortable microclimate that improves perceived comfort beyond the directly conditioned workstations. Workplaces are organised as “cloisters” or rings inserted within the larger volume. Their inner sides are transparent and permeable to the gardens, encouraging visual connection, walking loops and informal encounters; their outer sides concentrate services, storage and technical routes so that ducts and equipment remain out of sight and the work area stays low-tech and adaptable. Thermal loads are handled efficiently with radiant heating/cooling floors, allowing mild air temperatures and reduced fan energy, while the conditioned air transfers to the intermediate zone to enhance its performance. By combining adaptive reuse, a tempered buffer space, vegetation and low-energy conditioning, Galenicum 1822 reduces demand while creating a healthier workplace that is as much about climate resilience as it is about reactivating an existing building.
