Arimunani School

The project begins with a detailed study of the site’s climatic conditions, analyzing the direction of cold northern winds, summer sea breezes, solar radiation, and ground temperature. Based on this analysis, passive strategies are developed to transform the site into a climatic refuge, integrating vegetation and architecture to mitigate extreme conditions. Within this framework, in Arimunani the work of SO focused on reducing energy demand, with particular emphasis on health-driven ventilation management. Preheated air from the semi-exterior gallery surrounding the building is used to improve indoor comfort. Classrooms enable cross-ventilation through the sea breeze, while also ensuring good natural lighting and the effective use of solar gains in winter. The proportion of glazing on each façade, along with solar protections, was carefully studied to optimize thermal balance. The building is constructed mainly with biosphere-based materials, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions, and stands as a reference for its use of CLT timber structure. Its organization around an exterior courtyard creates a climatic oasis directly connected to the classrooms. Designed in phases, the project allows for ongoing research and improvement of constructive, spatial, and environmental solutions.
