The renovation of Teatre Arnau will preserve its original wood structure
H Arquitectes studio, with a proposal called “Boca a Boca”, has won the bidding process to carry out the renovation of Teatre Arnau building. The theatre was built in the late nineteenth century by Andreu Audet Puig, a Catalan architect specialised in construction of theatres and auditoriums such as Teatre Apolo and Casino de la Rabassada.
Teatre Arnau, located in Paral·lel Avenue, is the last “teatre de barraca” of Barcelona, a construction characteristic typical in the nineteenth century, based on a temporary and fast construction. This will be reinforced with the current intervention, which ensures the preservation of the original wood structure, the original facade and the horseshoe-shaped room. In fact, the theatre remained active until the mid-nineties, when unfortunately, due to repeated economic problems, it became a practically abandoned building. Since then, there have been many proposals for transformation, from its renovation as a geriatric to its demolition.
H Arquitectes renovation project will allow the old theatre to be converted into a municipal facility where several activities related to the performing arts and the building’s history will be carried out, as well as becoming a space for entities from Poble Sec neighbourhood.
Societat Orgànica has been part of the contest winning team and we hope to collaborate in the development of the environmental strategies proposed.
We congratulate H Arquitectes for this new challenge.
